Black City of Westland Cart Bin (Trash)
All household trash must be bagged before being placed in the black cart. The lid must close completely. Set bins on the street side of any ditches or at the back of the curb by 7:00 a.m. on collection day.

Blue City of Westland Cart Bin (Recycling)
Recyclables (other than shredded paper) must be placed loosely into the blue bin. All items must be empty, clean, and dry. Leave the lids on plastic bottles. Materials left outside the cart will not be collected.

Yard Waste Bin
Use up to 10 paper compost bags or up to 5 labeled garbage cans (35-gallon max). No bag or can may exceed 50 pounds. Branches must be cut to 4 feet, bundled with twine, and limited to 10 bundles per week. Plastic bags are strictly prohibited.

Holiday Schedule
General Rule
If a recognized holiday falls on a weekday on or prior to your scheduled pickup day, service will be delayed by one day for the remainder of that week. Holidays falling on a weekend do not disrupt the workweek schedule.
Yard Waste Exception
Yard waste is collected by a separate truck on your delayed trash day during active composting months.
Bulk collection will also be delayed by one day if it falls on your bi-weekly recycling week during a holiday.

Keep Glass Out of the Blue Bin
Westland's curbside program does not process glass. Throwing glass jars or bottles into your blue recycling cart will contaminate the load. Always take glass to the Westland Recycle Center instead.
Secure Your Shredded Paper
While you shouldn't bag regular recyclables, shredded paper is the exception. If you recycle shredded documents, they must be contained within a closed paper bag before going in the blue bin so they don't blow around the sorting facility.
Keep Dirt and Roots Out of Compost
Animal waste, dirt, rocks, root balls, and heavy mulch are strictly prohibited in yard waste bags. Including these items makes the bags too heavy and will result in your compost being rejected by the haulers.

Transition to Priority Waste & Bin Logistics
Westland partners with Priority Waste to manage residential refuse, recycling, and bulk collection. Most homes utilize a standardized black trash bin and a blue recycling cart. To ensure smooth automated collection, the Department of Public Service requires a strict 4-foot clearance between all containers, bulk items, and yard waste bags. This allows the mechanical arms on the Priority Waste trucks and the separate fleet vehicles enough space to operate without knocking over neighboring bins.
Special Rules for Glass Recycling
Unlike many surrounding municipalities, Westland's curbside single-stream recycling program does not accept glass of any kind in the blue bins. To properly recycle glass jars and bottles, residents must transport them directly to the Westland Recycle Center on Marquette Street. Keeping glass out of the curbside mix dramatically reduces contamination, prevents equipment damage at the sorting facility, and minimizes safety hazards for sanitation workers.
Bi-Weekly Bulk Collection Aligned with Recycling Day
Instead of offering weekly bulk pickup like some cities, Westland coordinates its large item collection with your bi-weekly recycling schedule. On your designated recycling week, you can place up to two large bulk items (such as a mattress or an old appliance) or up to eight excess trash bags at the curb. There is no need to call ahead or schedule a special appointment as long as you adhere to this limit.
Dedicated Clothing and Battery Drop-Offs
Westland actively discourages throwing old garments or household batteries into the black refuse bin, but these items cannot go in the blue curbside cart either. To solve this, the city provides dedicated battery recycling drop boxes at City Hall, the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center, and the William P. Faust Library. For textiles, the city promotes specific Used Clothing and Shoe drop box programs to keep reusable fabrics out of regional landfills.
